The 209 grt Aberdeen steam trawler Ben Dearg, A566
was built as the Corinthia in North Sheilds 1902. In 1906 she was
sold to the North British Steam Fishing Co. Ltd. and renamed the
Ben Dearg. On the 9th of September 1908 during a storm, she ran
aground to the east of Pennan, eight of the crew managed to scramble
ashore but the skipper was lost. Reports of her exact position vary
between 1 mile and 2 ½ miles east of Pennan. The coastline has been
searched underwater from Drostan’s Leack to Green Kaims with no
trace of any wreckage. Although the wreck has not yet been found,
the area provides some excellent scenic diving in depths of 10 to
15 metres just off the shore.
