The 197grt Dutch steam trawler Noordpool, built
1929, was washed ashore in a NNE gale about 500 yards west of Rosehearty
pier in the early hours of the 1st of March 1931. The wreck was
discovered in the morning, lying on the rocks on its port side,
adjacent to the shore. The trawler's clock was washed ashore, stopped
at one minute to five. All 14 crew were lost. Ten bodies were also
washed ashore and buried in the local cemetery. The skipper's body
was later exhumed and returned to Holland.
She was extensively salvaged from shore by a Peterhead
salvage firm.
The site at 57° 42.10N 02° 07.02W is shallow and kelp-covered
in the summer. The telegraph and portholes were found in 1994.
