The 131grt iron steamship William Hope, built 1883 and registered in Dundee, stranded on the 28th of October 1884 whilst en route from Fraserburgh to Burghead in ballast. Her engines had failed off Troup Head and she ran aground in Aberdour Bay. The wife of a local farm worker, Jane Whyte who had gone to check her husband’s boat, found the ship aground and waded into the sea to catch a rope thrown by one of the crew - by use of this rope, all the crew managed to get safely ashore. Jane Whyte was awarded a Silver Medal by the RNLI for the act - there is a memorial at the site of her home at Aberdour beach to commemorate the rescue.
