Charles Thomson F O L K

He was a Boys' Brigade officer and also the Sunday School Superintendent as a young man. As he progressed in years his fervour for Kirk life did not diminish and he became an elder – serving for over 30 years, receiving his 30-year certificate a few years ago. Throughout his time with the Kirk, he was a regular attendee and played a very active part in church life being a principal character in the elder’s concert group, which toured the local guilds and churches giving performances.

He also sang in the Kirk choir and was in Fraserburgh Hospital entertaining the patients on the evening before he himself was admitted to Aberdeen Hospital.

Charles was very keen on all things Scottish, but especially the Scots’s language in particular Doric poetry with it’s drole humour. He was able to recite many Doric poems and entertained many audiences with excellent delivery and timing of punch lines to perfection. He was a member of both the Fraserburgh and Rosehearty Burns’ Clubs. He served on the committee of the Fraserburgh club and rose to the rank of President.

Charles’ interests were wide and far ranging. He was a member of the local Probus Club and served as President. When Charles first retired he took up walking as a hobby and joined the Sandhaven Walking Club. He enjoyed several years as an active member, but even when his health started to prohibit his walks, he would still go with the club, but follow a shorter route.

For the past few years, Charles took up carpet bowls and played regularly before he had to stop before his bad back forced him to give up. As a young man, he was a very keen swimmer and shared this knowledge and skills with the local youngsters when he coached at the swimming club.
Charles was interested in all things local and did his bit to help the community by serving on the local Community Council. Again it was not until after his retirement that he was fully able to indulge his passion for travel. He has visited places so diverse as the Far East, Russia and America and also many Europen countries. He always looked forward to his next holiday whether it be abroad or one of Ronald’s bus runs in this country.

Charles had many passions throughout his lifetime but his greatest was for his family. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He liked nothing more than to have his grandchildren around the house.
